Beckenham Tennis Club
The club is running its summer holiday tennis programme (for 5-10 year olds and 11-16 year olds) from the 26th July to 27th August. Further details and application forms are available on the Coaching and Juniors page.
Congratulations to everyone that made it to the finals of the club competitions, and condolences to Ian Green who reached at least three if not four finals of the open competition before suffering a serious injury just two days before. At least he avoided having his photo taken. You can see the photos by clicking the relevant link below. You can quickly navigate through the pages of thumb nails by clicking on the index below the small pictures and see larger versions of the pictures by clicking on the appropriate thumb nail. I hope that's all clear!
Belated congratulations to Gary Eldridge as overall winner in this year's Brian Dodsworth Tournament, to Nikhil Varadharajan who came second and to Laura Sperring who was the highest scoring lady. Unfortunately, I was unable to take pictures this year, so if anyone has shots of the prize giving feel free to send them to me and I’ll add them to the site.
The draw for tickets for the Wimbledon Championships took place on Saturday. The list of successful applicants can be viewed by clicking here. Please note the rule about not reselling or transferring them to non-tennis section members.
Unfortunately, the Brian Dodsworth tournament was rained off and will be rescheduled for later in the year.
It's still not too late to become a member of British Tennis (it's still free). You can apply by clicking the logo below to go to their website where you will see a link to the application form (first link on the page). Just complete the form on-screen and send it off.
Results from the third round of the 2010 American Tournament have been added to the site and can be viewed by clicking here. Usman has taken a clear overall lead with Geraldine in second place. With summer approaching, the tournament will take a short break, and will be back in September.
This year's Handicap Tournament will run from Friday 30th April with the finals on Saturday 17th July. Entry forms, cost, payment methods and other details can be obtained and downloaded from here. The closing date for entries is Wednesday 28th April, so don't hang about!
The Open Tournament starts a bit later, running from Saturday 29th May, and as in recent years, the finals will be held on the same day as the handicap finals - i.e. Saturday 17th July. The closing date for entries is Wednesday 26th May. Entry forms etc. can be downloaded from here.
The fixture list for this summer has now been added to the site and can be accessed by clicking here or via the side bar on the left. I will double check the list, but if any of the team captains find an error, please let me know. The first home matches are on the 10th April and feature Mens 1 vs Blackheath and Mens 5 vs Bearstead and Thurnham.
The list of events and tea rota for 2010 have been added to the site. For events click here; and for the tea rota click here. Alternatively, you can click the appropriate links in the left hand column.
Good news for those who can't wait any longer. The photos from the halloween tennis are up and can be seen by clicking here. I thought we looked bad last year - but one year on, and less need for the mask - although wigs appear to be more in demand! Thanks go to Jonathan for organising the event.
Congratulations to Tracey Bunney and Roger Holmes for winning the Margaret Ross Tournament beating Rae Anderson and Tony Wood in the final.
The photos from the Jan Williams Fun Day have been added to the photo gallery joining those from other club events (such as the finals days and the 2008 hog roast). They can still be seen here for the time being.
Congratulations to Noeleen O'Reilly on winning the Brian Dodsworth Tournament, just ahead of Rae Anderson who finished with the same number of points but lost on the number of rounds won. Usman was the highest scoring man.
Photos of the prize giving can be seen here.
Are you interested in the history of the club, and more specifically (for now) who took part in the 1901 Beckenham Lawn Tennis Tournament or for that matter in 1975? If so, you need look no further than the programme for Saturday 15th June 1901 which can be seen here or for 1975 which can be seen here (without having to pay the 25p charge). The 1886 - 1986 Souvenir Programme has now been added and can be viewed here. This is part of a bigger project to further develop the history section on the site, and more will be going up soon. If you have any old photos or articles about the club you would like to have included in the record please let me know.
The fixture list for the winter leagues can be accessed here or via the sidebar. You can also access last season's results, if interested.
Twelve hardy tennis members braved the cold November weather with nothing but scary costumes, thermal underwear (or so I'm told) and a slug of Whiskey Mac to keep them warm. This was followed by fish and chips and too much alcohol (again) in the bar. You can still see the photos here or by going to the photo gallery. I'm still in big trouble! Oooooooo........
The format of the singles box leagues will be changing from 10th March. For further details including how to take part click here or go to the 'Singles' page.
There is still plenty of space in the gallery for your photos, so if you have any pictures from competitions or functions at the club or have anything of historical interest and would like them to be added to the site, please let me know.

Almost fifty players turned out for the Brian Dodsworth Tournament. Congratulations go to Tony Wood for winning overall in a closely contested competition, with Jan Woodard the highest scoring woman. For more photos from the prize-giving click
